The Activity Codes screen of the Mapping Wizard is for selecting SAP fields from the work order to use as activity codes in Primavera P3. You use activity codes in P3 to group together activities. A typical example of this is using the PM order type to group work orders. Using this screen, you can map the SAP work order type field to an activity code in Primavera P3. Once the field has been mapped in the Mapping Wizard, every time you transfer an SAP work order to Primavera P3, its activities will be tagged with the work order type in an activity code for that purpose.

Mapping an SAP Work Order Field to an Activity Code

In the left hand panel of the screen are the SAP work order fields which are available for you to use as activity codes. They are listed in the order of the SAP work order selection screen. The technical names are also given.

The right hand panel of the screen shows the activity codes in Primavera P3. The technical name of the codes is given as well as the description of the activity code. The activity code technical name is the one used in Primavera P3’s activity form as show below.

To set up an activity code in P3 which maps to an SAP work order field, select a work order field in the left hand panel using your mouse. Click on the top of the two transfer buttons to create an activity code in P3.

Maximum Number of Activity Codes in Primavera P3

The Mapping Wizard looks at the length of the SAP field – for example, a work centre is an 8 character field – and assigns this length to the activity code in P3. The total length of all of your activity codes combined in Primavera P3 must not exceed 64 characters in length. The wizard keeps track of this for you and stops you from attempting to assign more activity codes that you have the space for.

images\warning.gif In Primavera P3, each activity code has a length assigned for the values of that code. For example, an activity code of Order Type would have a length of 4 characters. The maximum length an activity code can have is 10 characters. This means that some SAP fields may be truncated. For example, the SAP work order field for equipment is 18 characters long although, in practice, few organisations use all of that space. This field is truncated to 10 characters in P3. If you were to use the SAP equipment field as an activity code, the mapping wizard will warn you that it is truncating the field.

How an Activity Code Mapping Works

When you transfer work orders from SAP to Primavera P3, Weavecentrix Desktop looks at the mapping rules that you defined in the Mapping Wizard and loads the appropriate values into the activity codes. For some fields, it will also fill out the description where it is directly available from SAP. The activity code values have the default P3 alphanumerical ordering.

The activity code is then assigned against the activity as shown in the example below.

Stop Mapping an SAP Field as an Activity Code

To stop using an SAP field as an activity code in Primavera P3 or to stop using an activity code which is not mapped, select the activity code in the right hand panel with your mouse. Click on the bottom of the two transfer buttons in the centre of the screen. The activity is cleared and the available space is recalculated.
